    Doughnuts, Molasses

    List of Ingredients

    5 C sifted Flour, or sufficient to make a stiff dough
    1 tsp salt
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 tsp cinnamon
    1 tsp ginger
    1 Large eggs well beaten
    1 C molasses
    1 C sour milk or buttermilk
    1 T melted fat
    Optional;
    1/2 tsp nutmeg
    1/2 tsp cloves





    Recipe

    1. In a large bowl, beat egg well. Add in molasses, spices and salt. Blend. Stir baking soda into milk and add in to egg mix. Blend well. Add in 3 cups flour, mix well with wooden spoon, adding more flour as needed to make a stiff dough. Refrigerate 1 hour or overnight. Roll out to 1/4 " thickness. Cut out with doughnut cutter.
    2. Fry in deep fat at 370 degrees, until brown, turn and brown other side. Drain on absorbent paper. Dust with sugar if desired (granulated or confectioners)
