    Fry Bread, Navajo

    List of Ingredients


    • 4 C all-purpose flour
    • 1 T baking powder
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 2 T nonfat dry milk
    • 1 1/4-1 1/2 C warm water
    • 1-2 T lard, for frying


    Instructions


    1. Combine dry ingredients. Gradually stir in warm water. Mix until dough forms a ball and comes clean from edge of bowl.(adjust water if necessary).

    2. Knead until elastic. Divide in 6 pieces. Roll into balls. pat each out into circles between palms, 1/2 inch thick.

    3. Melt lard 3/4 inch deep. Heat to 500 degrees F. on candy thermometer. Slip round of bread in fat, it will rise. Whene brown, turn and brown other side. Drain on paper.Repeat until all 6 are cooked.



    Final Comments


    Fry bread by itself is good drizzled with honey or powdered sugar(make 8-10 instead of 6).
