    Navajo Blue Corn Bread

    Recipe Introduction

    The cedar used is juniper. The Hopi also use ash in breads, however they burn suwvi, or the green twigs of the Chamisa bush for its high mineral content. Did you know you can burn the leaves of coltsfoot as a salt substitute ?

    List of Ingredients

    1 C cedar ashes
    1 pound blue cornmeal
    1 quart water

    Recipe

    Sift the ashes until fine and smooth and mix with some hot water. Add to this mixture the cornmeal. Gradually add all or part of the water to make a soft dough. Smooth surface of cakes with water. Cook on a medium hot grill until done. Use as a bread.
