    Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
    Makes 6 loaves.

    List of Ingredients




    2 cakes compressed yeast
    4 C buttermilk
    1 tsp baking soda
    2 C water
    1/2 C butter
    1 C sugar
    3 T salt
    1/2 C molasses
    6 C rye flour
    8 C white flour

    Recipe



    Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water, add 1 teaspoon sugar.
    Combine sugar, butter, salt, molasses, and water and bring to a boil.
    Add soda to buttermilk. Then add hot liquid mixture. Cool to lukewarm and add yeast. Add rye flour and beat thoroughly, then add enough white flour to make a stiff dough. Knead well and place in greased bowl to rise until light. knead down once and when light shape into 6 round loaves. Place on greased tins and let rise until light, then bake at 375 degrees F. for about 45 minutes.

    Var; 2 cups of raisins may be added if desired. Honey may be used in place of the sugar. Grated rind of three oranges may be added.
