    Creamed Turnips

    List of Ingredients




    1-8 medium turnips
    1/2 tsp caraway seed
    salt
    butter
    1/2 C whipping cream
    1/2 C sour cream
    cayenne pepper
    1/2 tsp dried basil
    1/2 tsp lemon juice

    Recipe



    Wash, peel and quarter the turnips. Cook in salted water with the caraway seeds, 15-20 mniutes, or until tender. Drain and cool. Slice the turnips about 1/2 inch thick. Butter a casserole dish, about 6x6". Add turnips and caraway seed. Mix the cream, 1/2 and 1/2, cayenne, basil and lemon juice and pour over the turnips.
    This can be chilled in the refridgerator at this point if casserole is premade.
    If baking rather than chilling, place casserole in a preheated 400 degree oven and bake, covered 10-12 minutes.
    If chilled, heat, uncovered, in the microwave on defrost for 12 minutes.(Microwaves vary). (I also used a corning ware casserole which requires extra time to heat the casserole dish).
    Variation; before cooking sprinkle with 1/3 C buttered bread crumbs (or crushed chips) and 1/2 tsp grated lemon zest. Small Kohl-rabi can be used in this recipe.
