So, what are the differences between a tangerine, a mandarin orange and a tangelo?

All are members of the mandarin family. Mandarins have been grown for centuries, most likely originating in southern China. We get the name mandarin because the fruit resembled, in shape and color, the buttons atop the hats worn by high-ranking public officials in the ancient Chinese empire. Those officials were called mandarins. We get the name tangerine from the Morocco port city of Tangiers. We get the name tangelo because it is a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit, which is the son of a pomelo. There are many varieties of this wonderful citrus, including Fairchild, Dancy, Kinnow, honey, satsuma, Clementine, fall-glo, royal, Minneola and Orlando. Minneolas and Orlandos are tangelos named after two main growing regions in Florida. Colder night temperatures mean sweeter tangerines. The sweetest ones usually arrive in December.
