    6 cups vegetable broth
    1-3/4 lb. (8 cups) green cabbage, quartered, cored, thinly shredded
    1-3/4 cups sweet onion, halved and cut into thin strips
    1/2 cup dried, tart pitted cherries, cranberries or raisins
    1 16-oz. can whole tomatoes, drained, seeded, cut into strips
    1 lb. boneless beef chuck stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes
    1/2 teaspoon pepper
    1/3 cup sugar
    1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
    2 tablespoons snipped fresh dill
    1 teaspoon salt

    In medium saucepan, bring broth to boil.

    In 5 or 6 quart slow cooker, combine cabbage, onion, cherries, and tomatoes. Place beef on top, season with pepper. Add hot broth. Cover; cook on low heat setting 9 to 10 hours or on high heat setting 4-1/2 to 5 hours, until beef and vegetables are tender. In small bowl, whisk sugar, lemon juice, dill and salt; stir into soup. Let stand 15 minutes. Ladle into bowls. Garnish with dill sprigs, if desired.

    To cook on stovetop: In 5 or 6 quart Dutch oven, simmer, covered all ingredients, except sugar, lemon juice, dill and salt, 2 hours, until beef and vegetables are tender. Add sugar, juice, dill and salt.
