This is a very simple recipe...it's the Chop Suey I've been eating since I was knee-high. It may not be fancy, but my DH puts it in his Top 5 All-Time Favorites, so I guess that counts for something!
1/4 c. shortening
1 1/2 cups diced lean pork
1 cup diced onion
1 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. black pepper
1 cup diced celery
1 cup hot water
1 can (14 oz) bean sprouts
Thickening:
1/3 cup cold water
2 tbsp. corn starch
2 tbsp. soy sauce
1 tsp. sugar
Recipe
Sear pork in shortening until it turns white. Add onions, fry for 5 minutes. Add celery, hot water, salt and pepper; cover and cook 5 minutes. Add bean sprouts, heat to boiling. Add thickening, cook 5 minutes.
Serve over hot cooked rice, or top it with chow mein noodles.
