Worlds Best Sugar Cookies

2 cups butter, no substitute
3 cups powdered sugar
2 large eggs, unbeaten
5 cups flour, do not pack in cup
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon lemon
1 teaspoon almond
2 teaspoons soda, scant
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar

note: no liquid

Cream well butter and sugar, add eggs and flavorings.Add dry ingredients and beat with electric mixer until soft and velvety. Let stand UNCOVERED at room temperature at least one hour before working with the dough. Roll out and cut into shapes, the thinner the better.Sprinkle with colored sugars before baking. Bake at 325 until lightly browned, watch carefully. Use ungreased cookie sheets. Yield: 6 dozen medium cookies.
This dough is a bit different in that you do not chill the dough. It will be soft, it works better for me to use a pastry cloth and rolling pin cover when making these. They are well worth the effort!
