    List of Ingredients


    • 1 cup chopped dates
    • 1 level tsp. soda
    • 3/4 cup boiling water
    • 1 egg
    • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
    • 1 tsp. salt (scant)
    • 1 tsp. vanilla
    • 1 1/2 cups flour
    • 1 tsp. baking powder
    • 3/4 cup chopped nuts
    • 1/4 cup melted shortening


    Instructions


    1. Pit and cut dates, place in a bowl and pour boiling water over. Mix well and let stand until cool. Beat egg until light; add sugar gradually, beating between additions. Add salt and vanilla and combine with date mixture. Add sifted dry ingredients; add melted, cooled shortening and chopped nuts. Mix well. Pour into well-greased bread pan and bake at 300 to 325 for 1 to 1 1/4 hours.
