    List of Ingredients




    1 3/4 cups cake flour
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/3 cup cocoa -- baking type
    1/2 cup shortening -- softened
    1 cup milk
    2 eggs
    1 teaspoon vanilla

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two layer pans, 8 or 9-inch pans or a 9 x 13-inch oblong pan.

    Combine dry ingredients including cocoa. Add shortening and 2/3 cup milk. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed on mixer or 300 vigorous strokes by hand. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl constantly. Add rest of milk, eggs and vanilla. Beat 2 minutes more, scraping bowl frequently. Pour into prepared pans.

    Bake 8-inch layers 35 to 40 minutes; 9-inch layers 30 to 35 minutes; oblong 45 to 50 minutes.

    Frost with favorite chocolate frosting, white frosting or a brown sugar type frosting.
