    Apple Pan Dowdy

    In saucepan, mix 1 cup packed brown sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 tsp salt, 1 teaspoon vinegar, 1 cup water. Cook over low heat, stirring until thick. Set aside.
    Start heating oven to 375. Measure 1 cup sifted flour, sift again with 2 teasooons baking powder, 3/4 tsp salt. With two knives,cut in 3 tablespoons shortening until size of peas, add 3/4 cup milk, stir until moistened but still lumpy.
    Arrange 5 cups sliced, peeled, cored apples in well greased 12x8x2 inch baking dish. To the sauce, add 1/4 tsp cinnamon,dash of nutmeg, 1 tsp lemon juice,1 tsp. vanilla, 2 Tablespoons butter. Pour over apples.
    Drop dough by tablespoons on top of apples. Bake 40 minutes, or until topping is brown. Serve warm with cream, or ice cream.

    (This is wonderful when served warm) My family always loved this recipe.
