    Recipe Introduction

My dear friend, Mary Garber, always made cookie trays and distributed them to the local businesses each xmas. I worked in the local bank and she always brought us a beautiful tray of cookies. She is now in the nursing home I will share these cookies with her every xmas.

    List of Ingredients

    1 c. oleo
    4 c. brown sugar
    4 eggs
    6 drops anise oil
    6 2/3 cups flour
    1 tsp soda
    2 T. hot water
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1 tsp cloves
    1 tsp nutmeg
    1 tsp cream of tarter

Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and beat well. Add anise oil and soda dissolved in the hot water. Add all dry ingredients.

Cover cookie sheets with waxed paper. Make into rolls between hands; about the size of a pencil. Place on waxed paper and cover cookie sheets with a tea towel and let set overnight. (I put them in the garage where it is cool).

Cut into 1/8 inch pieces and bake on ungreased cookie sheets.

    Bake 375 8 to 10 minutes.

Cool on cookie sheets and then store in tin containers. Plastic will make the cookie softer.

    Makes 1 1/2 gallon.

They will keep forever if you can keep your hands out of the cookie jar. They make wonderful gifts when put into small bags and tied with a xmas ribbon. You could purchase small bags of coffee to give with them.
