    List of Ingredients


    • 2 T. shortening
    • 1 1/3 c. corn meal
    • 1 tsp. baking powder
    • pinch of baking soda
    • pinch of salt
    • 1 egg
    • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk


    Instructions


    1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place shortening in cast iron skillet. Put in oven while preparing batter or remaining ingredients. When shortening is beginning to smoke, pour batter into skillet. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately.
