    A favorite comfort food, this recipe highlights the basic ingredients. Serve with sauteed greens or glazed carrots for a wonderful meal.

    List of Ingredients






    5 -6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
    water
    2 cups flour
    1/3 cup vegetable shortening
    2 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp salt
    milk

    Recipe












    1. Boil chicken until cooked in enough water to make a sizable broth.

    2. In a medium size bowl, mix all the dry ingredients.

    3. Cut vegetable shortening into dry ingredients. Add enough milk for a soft dough.

    4. Knead dough. Roll dough into a thin sheet with rolling pin on a floured surface. Cut dough into approximately 1 x 1 squares.

    5. Bring chicken and broth to a boil in a large pot.

    6. Drop dumplings one at a time into boiling broth. Do not stir. While adding dumplings, occasionally sprinkle broth with butter and pepper to taste. Let the dumplings cook on top of the chicken.

    7. Cook covered for 12-15 minutes, or until dumplings are cooked all the way through. Salt to taste. Serves 6-10.

    8. Cook's Notes: For easy preparation, cook the chicken in a crockpot on low all day until ready to prepare dumplings.
