My Dear Grandmother


Recipe Introduction


I make these every year for Christmas. Just the aroma of them baking takes me back to a different place in time... to my grandmother's kitchen.... one of my very favorite places to be when I was a child.


List of Ingredients




2 1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg (slightly beaten)
2 tbl. white vinegar
1 1/2 tsp. lemon rind (or vanilla or almond or lemon extract)

Recipe



In med. bowl, sift flour, baking soda and salt. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and shortening. Add sugar and continue creaming until fluffy. Add egg, vinegar and lemon rind (or extract). Add dry ingredients to egg mixture. Drop by spoonful on ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten with fork tines that has been dipped in water. Sprinkle with colored sugar or sprinkles. Bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Remove from pan and cool on wire rack.
