    Lynne's Mom's Mince

    Source of Recipe

    Daily Herald Jan. 30, 2002

    List of Ingredients

    1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 large onion (for 1 cup chopped)
    1 pound 93-percent-lean ground beef
1 envelope (1.2 ounces) brown gravy mix, such as Knorr Classic Brown Gravy Mix (see cook's note)
    1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
4 cups cooked mashed potatoes, rice or egg noodles, for serving, if desired

    Recipe

    1. Heat the oil over medium heat in an extra-deep, 12-inch, nonstick skillet. Peel and coarsely chop the onion, adding it to the skillet as you chop. Raise the heat to medium-high, and add the ground beef. Stir and cook for 5 minutes, or until the beef is finely crumbled, and the onion is slightly caramelized.
    2. While the beef and onion cook, mix the dry gravy mix with the amount of water indicated on the package. Add the Worcestershire sauce to the gravy mix, and whisk well. When the beef is fully cooked, add the gravy to the skillet, and stir to mix. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and cook until the gravy is thickened, about 5 minutes.
    3. Serve immediately over hot potatoes, egg noodles or rice.
    Serves four.
Cook's note: We tested this recipe with Knorr brand Classic Brown Gravy Mix. Several different manufacturers produce a brown gravy mix, and any one of them will work fine. Just stir in the water according to the package directions, and then proceed with the Mince recipe. The recipe is best with fully thawed meat to ensure a finely "minced" texture. If your meat is frozen, defrost it completely in the microwave before beginning the recipe. Use the guidelines for thawing in your microwave's instruction booklet.
