    2 cups thinly slice apples
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
    1 tablespoon lemon juice
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1 tablespoon sugar
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/3 cup shortening
    1/2 cup milk
    1 egg, well beaten
    2 tablespoon sugar

    Arrange apples in greased 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan. Sprinkle with mixture of sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon peel, and lemon juice. Heat in oven (400 degrees) while preparing shortcake.
    Sift together flour, baking powder, 1 tablespoon sugar, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture is like coarse crumbs. Add milk and egg at once. Stir until flour is just moistened.
    Spread dough over hot apples. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoon sugar. Bake at 400 degrees F for 34 to 40 minutes.
