    Grandma's White Bread

    Source of Recipe

    Aunt Lynn

    Recipe Introduction

This is my Grandmother Ettinger's recipe, since she is no longer with us I received the recipe from my Aunt Lynn. My Grandmother would bake in the kitchen on Holdiays and Sundays for all of her 13 kids and several grandkids. Yes she had 13 kids, my mother being the oldest!! She was the one who inspired me to cook. Grandma would always say "Eat something you'll feel better!" Here's to you GRANDMA!!

    List of Ingredients

    • 2 cups milk
    • 2 tablespoons sugar
    • 2 teaspoons salt
    • 1 tablespoon lard or shortening
    • 1 packet of yeast or 2 1/4 teaspoons
    • 6 to 6 1/2 cups flour

    Instructions

    1. Recipe makes 2 loaves.
    2. Scald milk. Stir in sugar, salt and lard.
    3. Cool until luke warm.
    4. Sprinkle yeast into 1/4 cup of warm water, stir until dissolved.
    5. Add yeast to milk mixture.
    6. Add 3 cups of flour to milk mixture.

    7. Beat with spoon until batter is smooth and sheets off of spoon.
    8. Add enough remaining flour, a little at a time, first by spoonfuls and then with hands, to make a dough that leaves the sides of the bowl.

    10. Knead until smooth and elastic, 8 to 10 minutes.
    11. Round up into a ball and put into lightly greased bowl; turn dough over to greased top.
    12. Cover and let rise in warm place until double in size,1 1/2 hours.
    13. Punch down, cover and let rise again for 45 minutes.
    14. Turn onto board and shape into ball.
    15. Divide in half. Shape into loaves and place in 2 bread pans.
    16. Cover and let rise until double in size about 1 hour.
