Gluten Free Apple Upside Down Cake

Topping :
4 tbsp. butter or margarine softened
? cups brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp. cinnamon
? tsp. nutmeg
1/8 tsp. salt
2 apples, cut into wedges, 12 slices per apple
? cups walnuts or pecans, chopped
Cake :
4 tbsp. butter or margarine, melted
1/3 cup milk
4 oz. applesauce
2 eggs
? cups brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp. cinnamon

Heat oven to 350?F. (175ºC). Apple Topping: In a small bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt; stir until a smooth paste forms. Spread evenly over bottom of an 8" round cake pan sprayed with gluten free nonstick cooking spray or lightly covered with butter. Top mixture with apple slices arranged in a pattern you like. Sprinkle chopped nuts over apple slices and set aside. Cake Batter : In a large mixing bowl, whisk melted butter, milk, applesauce, eggs, brown sugar and cinnamon until everything is well combined. Add gluten free Bisquick to mixture; stir until everything is well combined and lump free. You'll notice that batter has a much denser consistency than most cake batters. Spoon batter over apple walnut mixture and smooth into place with a rubber spatula or back of a spoon. Bake 40 - 45 minutes. until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let it cool 5 minutes before inverting it onto serving dish. If any apples remain in pan simply place them back where they belong.
