    1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
    3/4 cup granulated sugar
    1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
    1 egg
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk*
    ***VANILLA FROSTING***
    1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
    1 tablespoon softened butter or margarine, PLUS
    1 1/2 teaspoon softened butter or margarine
    3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
    2 tablespoons milk

    Recipe



    Heat oven to 350 degrees F.

    Beat butter, sugar, brown sugar, egg and vanilla in large bowl until well blended.

    Stir together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt; add alternately with buttermilk to butter mixture. Measure batter by scant 1/4 cupfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet.

    Bake 12 to 14 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely.

    Prepare vanilla frosting. Frost cookies, garnish with candies, if desired.

    * To sour milk: Use 1-1/2 teaspoons white vinegar plus milk to equal 1/2 cup.

    VANILLA FROSTING: Combine all ingredients in small bowl; beat until smooth.
