    Gwen Smith, when I was about 12 years old.

    List of Ingredients




    4 cups flour
    2 tsp baking powder
    2 tsp soda
    1 tsp salt
    2/3 cup shortening
    4 eggs
    3 cups sugar
    2 cups chopped walnuts
    2 cups mashed bananas
    1½ cups buttermilk
    1 tsp vanilla

    FROSTING

    11 ounces cream cheese, softened
    1½ sticks margarine
    1 box powdered sugar

    Recipe



    Combine shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. Dissolve soda in buttermilk, adding to creamed mixture with flour, baking powder, salt and bananas. Add nuts last. Pour into three 9" greased and floured baking pans. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool layers on wire rack.

    FROSTING

    Cream margarine and cream cheese until well blended. Add powdered sugar and beat until smooth. Frost between layers, top and sides of cake.
