1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup unprocessed wheat bran
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter or shortening
2/3 cup milk
1/2 cup mixed dried fruit bits
1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar
2 to 3 teaspoons orange juice, milk, or water
1. In a medium bowl combine flour, wheat bran, granulated sugar,
baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in
butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in center
of flour mixture. Add milk and fruit bits all at once. Using a fork,
stir just until moistened.
2. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead dough by
folding and gently pressing dough for 10 to 12 strokes or until dough
is nearly smooth. Pat or lightly roll dough until 1/2 inch thick. Cut
dough with a floured 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter.
3. Place biscuits 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in
a 450 oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden. Cool on a wire rack
for 10 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, stir together powdered sugar and enough orange juice to
reach drizzling consistency. Drizzle over warm biscuits. Serve warm.
