    "Nana" to Bubbe & Alex

    1/2 cup chopped onion (1 medium)
    1/2 cup sliced fresh button mushrooms
    1/4 cup chopped celery or green sweet pepper
    1 clove garlic, minced
    1 tablespoon butter or margarine
    3/4 cup uncooked long grain rice
    1 1/2 teaspoons instant chicken, beef, or vegetable bouillon granules
    1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    2 slices bacon, crisp-cooked, drained, and crumbled, or 1/4 cup
    finely chopped cooked ham or Canadian bacon (optional)

    1. In a medium saucepan cook onion, mushrooms, celery, and garlic in
    hot butter until tender.

    2. Carefully stir in rice, bouillon granules, pepper, and 1 1/2 cups
    water. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, about 15
    minutes or until the rice is tender and liquid is absorbed. If
    desired, stir in crumbled bacon.
