    Grecian: Baklava

    List of Ingredients

    1 pound filo (phyllo dough)

    4 cups chopped walnuts

    1 teaspoon cinnamon

    1/4 teaspoon cloves

    1/4 cup sugar

    1 pound unsalted butter

    Syrup

    3 cups sugar

    2 cups water

    2 tablespoons lemon juice

    1/3 cup honey

    1 cinnamon stick


    Recipe

    Prepare syrup by bringing sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon stick, and honey to a boil. Simmer for 20 minutes. Set aside to cool.

    Mix nuts, cinnamon and sugar. Butter a 9- by 13-inch pan and layer 5 sheets of filo on bottom, brushing each sheet with melted butter. Sprinkle 1/4 cup nut mixture and layer more filo. Continue, alternating layers and buttering each filo layer. Continue until all nut mixture is used. Top baklava with 5 sheets of filo, buttering between each layer of filo and on top of last sheet. Butter last sheet generously.

    Place in refrigerator 15 minutes to set. Cut in individual pieces. Before baking, sprinkle water on top of baklava. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 3/4 hour or until golden brown. Pour 2 cups cooled syrup over hot baklava after removing from oven.

    YIELD: Makes 40 pieces.
