    Mardi Gras: Sazerac

    Source of Recipe

    mardisgras.com

    List of Ingredients

    1 ½ oz. Rye Whiskey
1 or 2 dashes of Herbsaint
    1 tsp. Sugar
    2 dashes Peychaud Bitters
    1 Lemon twist
    Ice

    Recipe

Use 2 old-fashioned glasses. In one glass, fill with ice and add sugar and bitters. The bitters will help dissolve the sugar. Next, add the Rye whiskey. In the second glass, add and coat the glass with the Herbsaint. Remove the excess Herbsaint. Then, strain the rye whiskey, bitters and sugar into the Herbsaint coated glass. Add the lemon twist and enjoy!

    Serves 1

Herbsaint is a New Orleans liqueur, which serves as a substitute in the Sazerac for Absinthe, which is now illegal. Herbsaint does have a licorice flavor, so be sure to just coat the glass with a small amount. (Pernod is another substitute for Absinthe if Herbsaint cannot be found.) The absolute best place in New Orleans to get a Sazerac is at the Sazerac Bar in the Fairmont Hotel. Another great place is the Napoleon House Bar, which also adds a great deal of atmosphere to the experience.
