    List of Ingredients

One of the most frequently asked questions I get from readers on my site is how to get started on going vegetarian. A simple question, but not an easy answer. It's hard to undo years of a certain type of conditioning to forge a new path. So I suggest going gradually, and not being hard on yourself. Here are some of my other favorite tips:

First, it is good to get as much information as you can without overwhelming yourself. Becoming Vegetarian by Vesanto Melina and Brenda Davis (along with the companion volume, Becoming Vegan) is an excellent resource. And I also recommend Judy Krizmanic's A Teen's Guide to Going Vegetarian for older children and teens. Sharon Yntema has written a few books on vegetarian babies and children, published by McBooks Press.
As for food, unless you have a terrible diet that needs total revamping, try tailoring your current diet. That is, if you like Mexican, try making easy tacos or burritos with vegetarian refried beans instead of meat. Or meatless chili. Pasta dishes naturally lend themselves to meatless recipes. If you like the taste and texture of meat, there are numerous, and very good meat analogues on the market (veggie burgers, tofu hot dogs, "beefy" soy crumbles, etc.).
Call The Mail Order Catalog at 800-695-2241 for a free subscription. They offer one of the largest selections of vegetarian and natural health books anywhere.
Many readers who are beginning vegetarians (or are just in general very busy people who wish to eat well) have told me that my book, Vegetarian Express, is helpful to them because aside from being quick and easy, the book offers complete menus with shopping lists.
Please don't hesitate to e-mail me through my site or visit my vegetarian forums if you have any specific questions not answered here.
