    Biscuits- Cheese Angel Biscuits

    List of Ingredients

    1 package dry yeast
    1 teaspoon sugar
    2 tablespoons warm water (105 to 115 degrees F)
    1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
    3 cups self-rising flour
    (or 3 cups flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt)
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    3/4 teaspoon baking soda
    2 tablespoons sugar
    1/3 cup shortening
    1 cup (4 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

    Recipe

    Combine first 3 ingredients; let stand for 5 minutes. Add buttermilk to yeast mixture, and set aside.
    Combine self-rising flour, baking powder, soda, and 2 tablespoons sugar in a large mixing bowl; cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in shredded Cheddar cheese.
    Add buttermilk mixture, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Cover and chill 30 minutes. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead 4 or 5 times.
    Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickeness; cut with a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter. Place on lightly greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85 degrees F) free from drafts, 30 minutes. Bake at 400 degrees F. for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Yield 20 biscuits.
