    Bar- Marbled Cream-Cheese Brownies

    List of Ingredients

    • 4 squares (4 ounces) semisweet chocoloate
    • 5 tablespoon butter or margarine, divided use
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided use
    • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
    • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided use
    • 3 large eggs
    • 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon all purpose flour, divided use
    • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt

    Instructions

    1. Melt chocolate according to package directions with 3 tablespoons of the butter. Add 1 teaspoon of the vanilla and let cool.
    2. Grease a 9-inch square pan. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
    3. For cream cheese filling: In a medium size bowl, beat cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar and the remaining 2 tablespoons butter with a wooden spoon. When smooth beat in one of the eggs.
    4. When smooth, beat in one of the eggs. Stir in the 1 tablespoon flour, the lemon juice, and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
    5. For chocolate batter: Mix the 1/2 cup flour, the baking powder and salt. In a large bowl beat 2 remaining eggs with an electric mixer or wire whisk.
    6. Beat in remaining 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup at a time, until thick and pale. With a rubber spatula fold the flour mixture into the egg mixture; then fold in the cooled chocolate.
    7. To assemble: Reseve 1/4 cup of the chocolate batter; spread the rest of it in the bottom of prepared pan.
    8. Pour cream cheese batter over chocolate layer; spoon reserved 1/4 cup chocolate batter over top.
    9. Swirl a table knife or metal spatula through the two top layers to create a marbled effect.
    10. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.
    11. Remove from the oven and place pan on a wire rack to cool. Cut into 24 bars before serving.
