    Butter Cookies

    Source of Recipe

    List of Ingredients

    • 1 cup butter or margarine
    • 1 1/2 cups sifted confectioner's sugar
    • 1 egg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
    • 1 slightly beaten egg white

    Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cream butter; add sugar gradually and cream until fluffy. Add unbeaten egg and vanilla; beat well.

    2. Stir together, with a wire whip, the flour, soda, salt, and cream of tartar. Blend into creamed mixture.

    3. Divide the dough in half. Wrap air-tight and chill. Dough will keep several weeks in refrigerator.

    4. To prepare cookies, roll out the dough on a floured cloth to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut in desired shapes. Brush with the beaten egg white and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, colored sugar, chopped nuts or candied fruit. Be as creative as you like. These cookies may be baked without decorations and then frosted, as well.

    5. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 6 minutes. Makes 6 dozen cookies.
