Hot Crab Sandwich Casserole

12 slices white bread
butter, softened, as needed
1 pound sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 pound white crab meat
3 cups milk
4 eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 (10 3/4 ounces) can cream of mushroom soup
fresh mushrooms, as needed Recipe
Trim edges from bread and spread butter on both sides. Lay 6 pieces of bread in a casserole dish and sprinkle with grated cheese and crab meat. Put remaining slices of bread on top.
Mix milk, eggs and salt together. Pour over bread. Seal and refrigerate for 24 hours. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour. After baking, spread with undiluted mushroom soup and fresh mushrooms (I like to saute them in olive oil before putting them on top for a better flavor).
