    Homemade Elephant Ears

    Source of Recipe

    The Oregonian

    List of Ingredients

    • 1 1lb loaf frozen Rhodes bread dough (Other brands don't work as well)
    • 48 oz. vegetable oil
    • 3/4 cup sugar
    • 1 Tbsp. cinnamon
    • 1/4 cup melted margarine

    Instructions

    1. Thaw frozen bread dough in plastic bag in refrigerator.
    2. Preheat oven to 150 degrees. Cut loaf, with serrated knife so dough won't be compressed, into 6 equal pieces. Flatten each into a circle to 3-1/2" inch diameter.
Place on ungreased baking sheet. Cover with plastic wrap. Turn off preheated oven. Place cookie sheet in oven with door propped open for 30 minutes.
    3. Pour oil into skillet or wok. Oil should be 1-2" deep. Heat to 375 degrees. Combine cinnamon/sugar and set aside.
    4. Work one piece of dough at a time between fingers, sqeezing out all air bubbles. Stretch into a 10"X 4" ear. Carefully place in oil.
    5. With tongs, push dough under surface of oil. Fry until lightly brown on both sides, turning once. Place on paper towel to drain, blot top.
    6. Immediately brush with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar.
