List of Ingredients
- Filling:
- 1 cup (8 ounces) firmly packed pitted dates
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon peel
- Crust:
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups oats (not instant)
- 1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 sticks butter or margarine ( not spread), melted
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Line an 8" or 9" square pan with foil. Grease foil.
- Filling: Cut or snip dates in quarters. Place dates, sugar, and water in a heavy 2-qt saucepan over med. heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Boil, stirrong occasionally for 12-15 min. till thick. Watch carefully toward end; mixture may bubbly and splash. Stir in peel and cool to lukewarm.
- Crust: Mix flour, sugar, oats, nuts and salt in a med. bowl. Stir in meled butter till well blended till well blended.
- Remove 1 cup crust mixture; reserve. Press remaining mix evenly over bottom of prepared pan. Spread filling and them sprinkle with reserved crust mix. Press gently into an evan layer.
- Bake 45 minutes or till bubbles form around edges. Cool in pan on wire rack 45 minutes, then cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours or firm. Turn out onto a cutting board, peel off foil and invert again. Cut into bars with a long thin knife.
