BUTTERMILK SCONES
List of Ingredients
- 2 CUPS SIFTED FLOUR, MEASURE AFTER SIFTING
- 2 TABLESPOONS SUGAR
- 2 TABLESPOONS BAKING POWDER
- 1/2 TEASPOON SALT
- 1/2 TEASPOON BAKING SODA
- 1/3 CUP COLD CRISCO BUTTER FLAVORED SHORTENING
- 3/4 CUPS BUTTERMILK
- 2 TABLESPOONS HALF & HALF
Instructions
- PREHEAT OVEN TO 450°.
- RESIFT FLOUR WITH SUGAR, BAKING POWDER, SALT AND BAKING SODA INTO A LARGE BOWL. CUT IN THE VEGETABLE SHORTENING WITH A PASTRY BLENDER OR YOUR FINGERS UNTIL MIXTURE RESEMBLES COARSE MEAL. MAKE A WELL IN CENTER AND POUR IN BUTTERMILK. TOSS UNTIL DOUGH BINDS WELL TOGETHER. KNEAD DOUGH ON A LIGHTLY FLOURED SURFACE UNTIL SMOOTH, 3 TO 5 TIMES.
- ROLL DOUGH OUT 1/2" THICK ON A LIGHTLY FLOURED SURFACE. CUT INTO 2 1/2" ROUNDS WITH A FLOURED BISCUIT CUTTER. ARRANGE ON AN UNGREASED BAKING SHEET, SPACING 1" APART.
- BRUSH TOPS WITH HALF & HALF. BAKE UNTIL TOPS ARE GOLDEN BROWN, 12 TO 15 MINUTES. SERVE WARM WITH BUTTER AND PRESERVES OR YOUR CHOICE.
