    1950's better homes and gardens cookbook

    List of Ingredients

    • 1 cup sifted enriched flour
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 4t. baking powder
    • 3/4t. salt
    • 1 cup yellow corn meal
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1/4cup soft shortening


    1. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt; stir in corn meal.
    2. Add eggs, milk, and shortening. Beat with rotary or electric beater till just smooth, about 1 minute.(do not overbeat)
    3. Pour batter into greased 9x9x2 inch pan. Bake in hot oven (425) 20 to 25 minutes. For a tasty variation, top batter with crumbled bacon before baking.
