1/3 c shortening
1 c sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 squares (2 oz) unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 egg
1 1/4 c flour
1/2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c semisweet chocolate pieces
9 walnut halves


Recipe



Cream shortening and sugar till light and fluffy. Add vanilla and chocolate. Beat in egg.

Combine flour, soda, and salt, add to creamed mixture alternately with 3/4 c water, beating after each addition.

Spread batter in greased and floured 9x9x2" baking pan. Sprinkle with chocolate pieces. Arrange walnut halves over top. Bake 350° 30 minutes or till cake springs back when touched in center. Cool in pan.
