    2 cups of water
    2/3 cup of shortening
    1 teaspoon of ground cloves
    1 teaspoon of nutmeg
    1 teaspoon of salt
    2 cups of brown sugar
    1 cup of raisins
    3 cups of self-rising flour
    2 teaspoons of baking powder
    1 cup of nuts, chopped (pecans)
    1 cup of cornmeal
    1 teaspoon of baking soda

    Topping, if desired

    3/4 cup of sugar
    1/2 stick oleo
    1/2 cup of milk
    1 cup of coconut

    Boil water, brown sugar, shortening and spices for 3 minutes. Cool to lukewarm. Stir in dry ingredients, pour into greased and floured 13 x 9 inch pan. Bake on 350ºF. for 30 to 40 minutes. Cook topping 2 minutes.
    Spread on cake while cake is warm.
