Slop-Over Cake

Sift together:
1 cup sugar
1-3/4 cup pastry flour
1 Tbsp cream of tartar
1/2 tsp baking soda
melt 1/4 cup butter
Break 1 egg into measuring cup with butter, then add milk to fill cup
Beat well then pour into 2 greased 8" layer cake pans
Bake in moderate oven, 375° to 400° for 25 to 30 minutes till done (I would lightly touch the top of cake with finger and if cake springs back and doesn't leave a fingerprint it is done)
