    CAKE:
    1/2 cup shortening
    1 cup granulated sugar
    3 eggs
    1 cup apple butter
    2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    3 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. each salt, baking soda, cinnamon and nutmeg
    1 cup sour milk (milk with tsp. of vinegar added)
    1/2 cup apple butter
    FROSTING:
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    1/8 tsp. cream of tartar
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 egg whites
    1 tsp. vanilla

    Cream shortening and sugar then beat in eggs. When
    the mixture is light and fluffy. add 1 cup apple butter.
    Sift all dry ingredients together and add to creamed
    mixture. (Add the sour milk alternately with the dry
    ingredients to creamed mixture.) Bake in 2 (1/2")
    round layer pans. (Greased and floured.) Bake at 350
    degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool.

    Prepare the frosting. Spread bottom layer with 1/4
    cup apple butter. Top with 1 cup frosting, add top
    layer. Frost the remaining cake. Swirl 1/4 cup of
    the remaining apple butter on top to give a marbled
    effect. Frosting directions: Combine all but vanilla
    in a double boiler. Beat 7 minutes while heating.
    Should hold stiff peaks. Add vanilla.
