Purple Ribbon Pumpkin Cake

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
1 (16-ounce) can pumpkin
Cream Cheese Frosting (recipe follows)

Recipe
Combine first 7 ingredients; set aside.
Combine sugar and eggs in a large bowl; beat at high speed of an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add oil and pumpkin, beating well. Gradually add flour mixture, 1 cup at a time, beating at low speed just until blended.
Pour batter into an ungreased 9-inch tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Cool in pan 10 minutes; remove from pan, and let cool completely on a wire rack. Frost top and sides of cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, and garnish with pecan halves.
Makes one 9-inch cake
CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:
2 (3-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups sifted powdered sugar
Combine cream cheese and vanilla, beating at medium speed of an electric mixer until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating until mixture reaches spreading consistency.
Makes 1-1/2 cups
