    1 1/2 cups plus 2 Tablespoons all purpose flour
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    8 Tablespoons (1 stick) butter at room temp.
    1 cup (lightly packed) brown sugar
    2 teaspoons vanilla
    1 egg
    1/4 cup *buttermilk
    6 oz (1 cup) semi-sweet chocolate chips

    Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and grease pans.

    Sift flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

    Using an electric mixer, cream the butter, brown sugar and vanilla together until fluffy. (Scrape the bowl as needed.)

    Add the egg and beat 30 seconds.

    Add a third of the flour mixture; mix.

    Add buttermilk; mix for 5 seconds.

    Add the rest of the flour mixture; blend well.

    Add the chocolate chips; mix for 5-8 seconds.

    Drop the dough by generously rounded Tablespoons 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.

    Bake until the cookies are light golden and the centers are slightly puffed, about 7-12 minutes.

    If you do not have buttermilk, you can make a buttermilk substitute by mixing 1 cup milk with 1 1/2 Tablespoons lemon juice. Remember, only 1/4 cup of buttermilk is required for this recipe.

    This recipe made 15 large cookies.
