Chocolate Lovers Caramel Squares

1 package semisweet chocolate chips -- any kind
(I use Nestles)
2 tablespoons shortening
30 caramel candies -- Kraft preferred
2 tablespoons water
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup peanuts or walnuts
Recipe
Melt chocolate chips and shortening over pan of hot water. Spread evenly on bottom of baking pan lined with aluminum foil. Place in refrigerator until firm; about 15 minutes. Melt caramels, butter, and water over hot water. Add nuts and spread over chocolate. Refrigerate until firm. Pour remaining chocolate over caramels. Let set for about 1 hour. Cut into 1" squares.
Makes 36.
I use chopped walnuts.
