    Internet

    4 Cups flour, all-purpose -- sifted
    1 Teaspoon baking soda
    1 Teaspoon salt
    1 Teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1/2 Teaspoon cream of tartar
    3/4 Cup sugar
    1/4 Cup oil -- Crisco
    3 Large eggs
1 Cup sour milk -- * see note
    oil for deep frying

    Recipe

. * to make sour milk, add 1 tablespoon vinegar plus enough milk
to make one cup--let stand a few minutes.
Combine the flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg and cream of tartar.
In large mixing bowl, cream the 3/4 cup sugar and the Crisco oil and beat in the eggs.
Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beating just until blended.
Cover and chill at least 2 hours.
On floured surface, roll dough 3/8 inch thick.
Cut with floured 2 1/2 inch doughnut cutter.
Fry in deep oil heated to
365 degrees til doughnuts are golden brown, about 2-3 minutesm turning once.
Drain on paper towels then roll in granulate sugar.
Makes 24 doughnuts and 24 holes.

NOTES: The recipe creator's "knack" for the best doughnuts--
On lightly floured surface, roll chilled dough about 1/4 inch thick.
Dip doughnut cutter in flour between cuts and cut straight down.
Heat Crisco oil in saucepan to 365 degrees, using a frying thermometer
    to check temperature.
