List of Ingredients
3 tablespoons butter (plus a little extra for greasing pan)
- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 2½ cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ cup toasted bread crumbs
Recipe
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-by-9-inch baking dish.
2. Cook macaroni in a 4-quart pot according to package directions, and keep an eye on it as you prepare the cheese sauce.
3. Melt butter in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-high heat. Add flour and stir briefly. Add milk to the mixture and bring just to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Add 2 cups of cheese and stir until sauce becomes thick and creamy. Add salt, pepper and garlic powder.
4. When macaroni is cooked, drain, then pour into baking dish. Pour hot cheese sauce over macaroni and sprinkle bread crumbs and remaining ½ cup cheese over the mixture.
5. Bake 30 to 40 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbling.
