    Homemade Dough Decorations

    List of Ingredients

    4 c. all purpose flour
    2 c. salt
    1 1/2 c. warm water

Mix all ingredients thoroughly with hands. (If dough is too dry, work in 1 T. water.) Knead dough 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Divide dough into several parts and knead desired food color into each part. Roll or mold as directed below. Dough can be wrapped in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerated for about two weeks.

To Roll: Roll dough 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick on a lightly floured surface. Cut with cookie cutters. If ornaments are to be hung, make a hole 1/4 inch from top with end of plastic straw.

To Mold: Shape dough, no more than 1/2 inch thick, into figures such as flowers, fruits, vegetables or animals. If ornaments are to be hung, insert fine wire loop in each.

Heat over to 250*. Place ornaments on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 30 minutes. Remove from oven: turn ornaments over, if possible. Bake 1 to 1 1/2 hours longer or until completely hard and dry. Pemove from cookie sheet to wire rack to cool.

Sand lightly with fine sandpaper until smooth if necessary. Outline desired designs on ornaments with pencil. Paint with plastic-based poster or acrylic paint. (Do not forget to paint backs and sides. Allow paint to dry. Place ornaments on waxed paper and spray with clear plastic polyurethane to finish. Or brush ornaments with clear shellac.

    About 5 dozen 2 1/2 inch ornaments.

    Decorating ideas...
Use garlic press to make hair, wreath or grass.
Brush with slightly beaten egg white before baking for a glossy surface.
Brush with milk before baking for for a golden brown surface.
