    Recipe Introduction

I got the recipe off of Recipezaar- and just modified it a bit. I halved the recipe as I thought this was too much to go into my Cuisinart. Instead of using 1 1/4 cups half & half, I used about 3/4 cup half/half and 1/2 cup FF half/half. I used regular whipping cream (not heavy). The recipe turned out so very creamy and thick that I think next time I'll try using all FF half/half. I also used reduced-fat Oreos. The base (before adding Oreos) is a very rich, vanilla custard ice cream. Delicious that way too as I snuck a couple of spoonfuls The only drawback is that you pretty much have to start this the night before since you simmer the custard and it needs time to get really cold in the fridge.

    List of Ingredients

2 1/2 cups half and half
    8 egg yolks
    1 cup sugar
    2 1/2 cups whipping cream
    4 tsp. vanilla
    1/8 tsp. salt
    20 crushed Oreo cookies

    Recipe

    1. Heat half and half until very hot (not boiling), stirring often. (I did this in the microwave).
    2. Mix egg yolks and sugar until well blended and slightly thickened. Very gradually blend in half and half.
    3. Add mixture to a medium sauce pan and cook over medium heat until steamy and bubbles form around the edge, stirring constantly. Do not boil.
    4. Once hot, pour into a large bowl and stir in whipping cream, vanilla and salt.
    5. Cover and chill thoroughly.
    6. Add to ice cream maker per manufacturer instructions, stir in crushed oreos during last minute or so of freezing.
