    A sweet cakelike cornbread. This is also good as a
    snack or toasted with honey or jelly on for breakfast.

    Johnny Bread, (cornbread cake)

    1 cup butter
    1 level teaspoon baking soda
    1 cup flour
    1 cup cornmeal
    7/8 cup granulated white sugar
    2 eggs
    2 Tablespoons butter flavored shortening
    pinch of salt

    Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
    Grease and flour a 9x12x2 inch, or a 13 inch, or 2 small loaf pans.
    Mix the butter and the baking soda together. Set aside.
    Sift together the flour and cornmeal.
    Now mix all the ingredients together.
    Pour into chosen pan(s).
    Bake for 20 - 25 minutes, or until a tester comes out clean.

    This may be used in place of bread.
    Or it is great just for snacking.
