    scratch - Blackberry Jelly Cake + Icing

    for the cake:
    3 c. flour
    1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
    1/4 tsp. ground cloves
    1/4 tsp. ground allspice
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 c. buttermilk
    1 c. butter or shortening
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    4 eggs
    1 c. blackberry jelly

    for the icing:
    2 1/2 c. sugar
    1/2 c. butter
    1/4 c. sweet milk

    for the cake:
    Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour 2 cake pans.
    Sift flour, cinnamon, cloves and allspice together. Set aside.
    Stir baking soda and buttermilk together. Set aside.
    Cream butter and sugar well.
    Next add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
    Alternately add flour and milk, a little at a time.
    Add the blackberry jelly and mix well.
    Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until tester comes out clean.

    for the icing:
    Mix in frying pan on low heat and slowly cook until it begins to boil.
    Remove from heat.
    Let cool and stir just before icing the cake.
