    1/2 c. butter, (1 stick)
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    2 well beaten eggs
    1 tsp. vanilla
    2 c. sifted cake flour, (sift before measuring)
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 c. mashed bananas (about 3 very ripe, almost black)
    3/4 c. buttermilk

    for frosting:
    3/4 lb. sifted powdered confectioners sugar
    4 tbsp. melted butter
    1 tsp. vanilla
    enough milk to make the frosting spreadable

    Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour a 9x13x2" baking pan.
    Cream the butter and sugar together thoroughly.
    Beat in the eggs and vanilla.
    Sift the flour several times with the baking powder, baking soda and salt, then add to the batter alternately with the milk, stirring each time just until combined.
    Stir in the bananas.
    Turn into the baking pan.
    Bake for 35 - 40 minutes, just until cake tests done.
    Let cool in the pan.
    Mix the frosting ingredients in a bowl.
    Spread the frosting on the cooled cake.
    Cut into squares and serve.
