    health - Natural Cold Remedies

"Fresh" pineapple juice diluted with the same amount of water, is wonderful for colds!
It's less allergenic than citrus and less acidic in the stomach, it won't upset it and cause that burning feeling that you can get with orange juice, and it actually contains more vitamin C.
It also breaks down mucus better. To treat a cold, drink four to eight ounces of juice at least four times a day.

Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, help prevent dehydration, and can soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat.

Sleep With an Extra Pillow Under Your Head. This will help with the drainage of nasal passages. If the angle is too awkward, try placing the pillows between the mattress and the box springs to create a more gradual slope.

Lemon is the most important among the many home remedies for common cold. It is beneficial in all types of cold with fever. Vitamin C-rich lemon juice increases body resistance, decreases toxicity and reduces the duration of the illness. One lemon should be diluted in a glass of warm water, and a teaspoon of honey should be added to it. This should be taken once or twice daily.

    Aromatherapy
At first sign of a cold, if you have one, turn on your aromatic diffuser. Scenting a room with the right scents can relieve the symptoms of a cold. Great ones to use are exotic essences such as ravensare and niaouli for their natural anti-infectious and antiviral properties. Because these oils have strong, slightly medicinal smells, you could blend them with a sweeter-smelling oil such as rosewood, lemon, fir, cherry, coconut, blackberry, eucalyptus, or pine. All if these have an antiseptic effect. The most important thing is to start using aromatics as soon as you start feeling weak and run-down.

Natural Remedies for Colds and Flu using ingredients you probably already have
Lemons:Mixed with a little honey and hot water, lemons help soothe sore throats. For fevers, my grandmother used to squeeze a little lemon juice in a dish of cold water and apply it to my forehead with a washcloth. It is also gives you some added vitamin C to help your immune system.
Honey: Excellent for sore throats and coughs. You can take it plain, one teaspoonful at a time or mix it with some hot water and lemon.
Garlic:One of my favorite cough and cold remedies involves garlic. Chop and peel five garlic cloves. Cover with a half a cup of honey. Mix in a little cayenne pepper or ginger. Let sit for at least an hour. Take one teaspoonful as needed.
Cayenne pepper: Used in small amounts, cayenne pepper helps your immune system. Add it to food or make the garlic/honey recipe. It also helps keep you warm if you have a chill.
Chamomile tea: Chamomile is commonly used to help you relax and sleep. It is also good for stomach problems and fevers. Don't use if you are allergic to ragweed. Also don't use in large amounts if you are pregnant (more than two cups a day).

Peppermint tea: This is one of my favorite herbs to use, especially when my sinuses are all blocked up. You can either drink it, or put a few tea bags in your bath water. Don't use in large amounts if pregnant.
Ginger: One of my favorite teas to drink when I feel chilled and tired from a cold or the flu is ginger tea. Cut off a one-inch piece of the fresh root and peel it. Grate it into a mug and pour one cup of boiling water. Let it stand for five minutes. You can season it with honey if you want. This is also a good tea for stomach problems.
Thyme: This is one of my favorite herbs to use when I have a cough. To use, prepare a tea with one cup of the dried herb and one cup hot water. Let it steep for fifteen minutes. Strain out the herb and sweeten with honey if needed. Store it in the refrigerator and take one teaspoon every hour as needed. Only use this remedy for a day or two.

Oregano:This is also used for coughs and colds. Prepare it the same way as thyme.
Sage: Sage is a classic sore throat remedy. Prepare the same as thyme and oregano. You can either drink it or gargle with it depending on your preference. Sage is also good for fevers.
Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a remedy that may help your immune system. Add small amounts of the powder to food. You can also add the powder or a cinnamon stick to an herbal tea.

Your nose all stuffed up? Try eating some hot or spicy foods which should open up those blocked nasal passages and you won't have the rebound effect of taking too many nose drops! Not hungry? Try a few minutes of vigorous exercise. The increased oxygen demand of your body will almost certainly cause you to breathe deeper and help open-up your blocked nasal passages naturally. Chest congestion can be effectively cleared up by breathing a mixture of hot vinegar, or white wine. Breath in the vapors for a few minutes, and you should get relief!
Coughs and sore throats can be controlled with several home remedies. A classic required a large lemon. Start by slowing roasting it until it just splits open. Now take up to half a teaspoon of honey with the juice from the lemon. Repeat at hourly intervals until the cough is under control.
    Hot Lemon
    1 lemon
    1/2 teaspoon honey
    1 cup boiling water
Squeeze the juice from a fresh lemon into a cup of boiled water, add honey for taste. Sip while warm.
    Hot Orange & Ginger
    1 orange
    1/2 teaspoon honey
1/4 teaspoon ginger (helps to soothe the throat)
    1 cup boiling water
Squeeze the juice from a fresh orange into a cup of boiled water, add ginger & honey for taste. Sip while warm.
    For Colds and Flus:
Drink 3 cups of cayenne tea daily.
3 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil in a vaporizer is good to relieve upper respiratory.

For congestion relief, make a tea of fresh parsley, steep the parsley in hot water for a few minutes then sip tea slowly. Drink daily.
For breathing problems: eat something spicy, such as eating a chili pepper, whole garlic or gargle with tabasco sauce in a cup of water.
    Onion cough syrup

Cook 4-5 large onions in a pot with 3/4 cup honey. Simmer for approx 1 1/2 hours-2 hours, strain. Take as often as needed for relief. Use warm.
